This scholarship has been created in memory of Kendra Gail Harrington. Kendra attended Alexander Central High School where she participated in volleyball, basketball and track while working at the local Village Inn Pizza Parlor. During her high school years, Kendra developed an early passion for helping others. She became a Certified Nursing Assistant in High School through the Health Occupation Program. After high school, Kendra enrolled in Catawba Valley Community College’s (CVCC) Nursing program.
Upon graduation from CVCC, Kendra began working at Catawba Valley Medical Center’s Emergency Department. She was an astute learner and earned the respect of her fellow nurses and physicians. Kendra quickly became a charge nurse and preceptor to new nurses. In her free time, Kendra enjoyed traveling around the world. Her adventures took her many places throughout Europe, the Caribbean and many regions across the US.
One of Kendra’s favorite sayings was “Live life to the fullest.”
Kendra incorporated her love for travel with her passion to help others and became a travel nurse. This opened many additional adventures across the United States from the East Coast to the West Coast with her last nursing assignment being in Hawaii, which was her favorite spot. Every place that Kendra worked, others were immediately drawn to her for her guidance, kindness, passion and she had the unique ability to make everyone feel welcomed and supported. As stated by one of her fellow travelling nurses, “Thank you for teaching us all the power of love, the necessity to #liveeachdayasifitsyourlast. Your love for family, friends, and all things adventure will continue to shine on in all the lives you’ve touched.”
In establishing this scholarship, Kendra’s close family and friends wish to recognize dedication to education and service to others for a local high school student pursuing a career in the nursing field and to uphold the kind spirit that Kendra instilled with us.
